
Investigation of Governor's Failure to Pay Taxes, Coal Safety Fines

In 2016 my team and I partnered with NPR to disclose $15M in unpaid taxes and fines by Jim Justice's coal companies. Further investigation revealed that as Governor of West Virginia the Justice companies amassed millions in unpaid mine safety fines. The DOJ eventually forced payment.

Blackjewel Bankruptcy
August, 2019, to December, 2020
I guided a team of reporters through coverage of the bankruptcy of the Blackjewel coal company and a months-long protest by miners.

Katrina and BP Oil Spill Coverage, Living on Earth
September 2005 to June 2010
Within weeks of Hurricane Katrina's landfall I was reporting from southern Louisiana. My stories connected climate change to storm intensity, oil drilling to wetlands loss, and documented the human toll. In 2010 I returned amid the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster and revisited many of the communities struck by both storms and the spill.
